Group Travel Without Chartering the Whole Ship

Not every group needs a whole ship. If you have a smaller party — a club, an alumni association, a church group, a circle of friends — reserving a block of cabins on a scheduled sailing gives you the shared experience without the full-charter commitment.

How a cabin block works

We reserve a set number of cabins on a chosen departure under the line’s group terms. Your guests book into that block, usually with a deadline after which unused cabins go back to the line. You sail the published itinerary alongside other travelers, but you can often arrange things just for your group.

Group Amenities to Ask About

Group benefits vary by line, ship, season and group size, so treat these as questions to ask, not promises:

  • A private cocktail reception or welcome event for your group
  • Reserved seating together at dinner
  • Private guided tours or an exclusive excursion in one port
  • Onboard credit or amenities for group members
  • Benefits for the group organizer or tour leader
  • Flexible name-change and deposit terms within the group contract

Groups That Work Well on River Cruises

Cabin blocks suit groups that share an interest. Wine clubs gravitate to the Rhône, Douro and Moselle; history groups to the Danube and the Rhine; art lovers to the Seine and Provence; garden clubs to spring departures through the Netherlands and Belgium, when the tulips are out. Alumni and faith groups often pick an itinerary with a strong cultural program and add a private lecture or service onboard. Whatever the theme, choosing the river first and the ship second usually gives the best result.
