River Cruise Charters & Private Groups
Charter the whole ship or reserve a block of cabins — your group, your river, your celebration.
Request a Charter QuoteYour Group, Your Ship, Your River
A river cruise is already one of the most sociable ways to travel. Charter the whole ship — or reserve a block of cabins for your group — and it becomes something else again: a private floating venue that carries your guests through Europe or America, with dinner, the welcome reception and the farewell party all under one roof.
River Cruise Charter explains how full-ship charters and private group sailings actually work, who they suit and how far ahead to start. Then, when you are ready, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise take your brief to the river cruise lines, gather proposals and handle the contract and the details on your behalf.
Why river ships suit groups
River ships are small by cruise standards. In Europe, locks and bridges limit their size, so a typical ship carries somewhere between about 100 and 190 guests. That is large enough for a company meeting, an association trip or a big family celebration, yet small enough that one group can fill it. Everyone eats together, everyone hears the same welcome toast, and the ship docks in or close to town centers almost every day.
For smaller parties, European hotel barges carry a handful of guests up to about twenty and are often chartered whole by a single family or group of friends.

Two Ways to Travel as a Group
| Full-ship charter | Private group (block of cabins) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you reserve | Every cabin on the ship | A set number of cabins on a scheduled sailing |
| Itinerary | Can often be customized within the river, locks and docking available | The published itinerary |
| Other guests | None — the ship is yours | Your group sails alongside other travelers |
| Branding & events | Wide scope: welcome signage, private events, custom touches | Private events can sometimes be arranged; the ship stays shared |
| Commitment | Larger contract and deposits, signed well in advance | Smaller commitment, with group terms set by the line |
| Best for | Companies, associations, very large families, special-interest groups | Clubs, alumni, faith groups, reunions, friends traveling together |

Every line sets its own rules, but on a full-ship charter you can usually discuss:
- Itinerary — the river and direction, which ports to stop at and how long to stay, within what the river, locks and docking slots allow.
- Excursions — private tours, exclusive venue visits, tastings and dinners ashore.
- Onboard program — meeting space in the lounge, speakers, entertainment and themed evenings.
- Food and drink — special menus, regional wine pairings, a gala dinner.
- Branding — welcome signage, printed programs, cabin gifts and named events.
What usually cannot change: the ship’s safety rules, crewing, river regulations and the physical limits of the vessel.
Start Early
River ships are popular and lines plan their seasons well ahead, so charter enquiries generally need a long runway — often a year or more, and earlier for peak season dates. Our charter planning timeline walks through the stages from first enquiry to sailing day. The sooner you have a rough head count, a budget range and preferred dates, the more ships and rivers will still be open to you.
